Reaching the highest point of a mountain normally sounds like the end of the challenge. On Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon, some visitors are discovering a final obstacle: a long queue for the summit marker.
Heavy summer crowds have reportedly produced waits of more than an hour at the 1,085-metre peak. Some visitors say people have pushed past the line or climbed up the rocky side to reach the marker first, leading to arguments and concerns about safety.
One trip that ended just short of the goal
Helen Pacey travelled with her family on the Snowdon Mountain Railway and hoped to touch the metal plate at the summit. Because the return train allowed only a limited time at the top, the group had about 30 minutes to complete the final short section.
After waiting while other visitors pushed ahead, the family had to return without reaching the marker. Pacey, who has had both hips replaced, said climbing around the queue on the rocky side was not an option.
Why the summit gets congested
Yr Wyddfa combines a famous hiking destination with a mountain railway that brings additional visitors close to the top. On clear summer days, walkers and rail passengers can arrive at the small summit area at the same time. Many want the same photograph beside the marker, creating a bottleneck in a place with limited space and steep drops nearby.
Some visitors have suggested clearer one-way routes, barriers or a staff presence to discourage queue-jumping. Others argue that the mountain belongs to everyone and that patience is simply part of visiting at a busy time.
The unusual scenes are a reminder that even outdoor landmarks can face the same crowd-management problems as major attractions. Reaching the mountain may take hours; during peak season, reaching the final marker can require another wait.
