Some of the handiest household shortcuts never needed a gadget, a subscription or a cupboard full of specialist sprays. They were the little tricks passed around British kitchens for generations — and quite a few still earn their keep today.
How many of these do you remember seeing at home?
1. A damp rubber glove lifts pet hair in seconds
Pull on a clean, slightly damp rubber glove and sweep your hand across fabric sofas or car seats. Loose hair gathers into easy-to-pick-up clumps. Test a hidden patch first and avoid soaking delicate upholstery.
2. A tea towel stops a chopping board wandering
Fold a damp tea towel and place it under the board. The extra grip helps keep it steady while you chop — a tiny habit that makes food preparation feel much safer.
3. Washing-up liquid tackles fresh greasy marks
A small drop worked gently into a washable fabric can help loosen cooking grease before a normal wash. Always check the care label, test colourfastness and do not tumble-dry until the mark has gone.
4. A pillowcase traps dust from awkward blades
Slip an old pillowcase over a cool ceiling-fan blade, then draw it back slowly. The dust falls into the case instead of over the room. Make sure the fan is switched off at the wall first.
5. Lemon steam softens microwave splatters
Put water and a few lemon slices in a microwave-safe bowl, heat until steamy, then leave the closed door for a couple of minutes. Wipe the softened mess away carefully — the bowl and steam will be hot.
6. Bicarbonate of soda helps a stuffy fridge smell fresher
An open, clearly labelled bowl of bicarbonate of soda can absorb everyday fridge odours. Keep it where it cannot be spilled, replace it regularly, and never confuse it with food ingredients you plan to use.
7. Diluted white vinegar can shift kettle limescale
Many traditional kettles can be descaled with a diluted white-vinegar solution, followed by thorough rinsing and fresh-water boils. Check your kettle maker’s instructions first, because some finishes and appliances need a different method.
The one rule Gran would insist on
Never mix household cleaning products. Keep products in their original containers, ventilate the room, protect children and pets, and follow the manufacturer’s directions. Old-fashioned common sense is the best trick of all.
